Heating buildings and clearing snow from the car park at a Central Bedfordshire Council depot in Dunstable

The Central Bedfordshire Council asked Ringway Jacobs (a VINCI Construction subsidiary) to equip its Thorn Turn Highways Depot in Dunstable with a Power Road® system in 2020. The 210 sq. metre heat-harvesting pavement, which is now up and running under the car park, melts the snow on it and heats the building.

A few key figures

Needs:

  • Heat production: 40 MWh a year
  •  Snow removal: 850 kWh a year

Installation:

  • Power Road® area: 210 sq. metres
  • Inter-season storage: 5 geothermal probes, 150 metres deep
  • Water-to-water heat pumps: three, 15 kW each

Praise for Power Road®

Local authorities provided funding for the project through Adept (the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport).
